Janet Butler had a stellar career at P&G that included an assignment in Nigeria. She found a new passion and is currently the Vice-President for the United Way Africa, and a sponsor for United Way Ghana. She’s been involved with the organization for more than 17 years and has helped the organization transform and significantly increase its impact.
“United Way Ghana has moved from a charitable organization to an impact organization convening community stakeholders to address local problems. In its short tenure, United Way Ghana has impacted thousands of lives across Ghana, improving educational outcomes for vulnerable children, providing opportunities for financial stability to countless families, and most importantly giving Ghanaians from all walks of life the opportunity to give, volunteer and advocate for the success of their communities.” Janet Butler
United Way Ghana, established in 2003, is devoted to addressing poverty and the issues it can cause. It does so by building community capacity for sustainable development in education, income stability, and health, the key building blocks for a good quality life.
The $19,000 P&G Alumni Foundation 2020 grant is directly aimed at building community capacity for sustainable development in Senya Beraku, located on the central southern coast of Ghana.
Their project will work with 15 young farmers, 20 women from families of fisher folk, and 5 single parents in Senya Beraku. It will be used to provide financial literacy, vocational skills and mentoring to produce and run businesses focused on: jewelry, batik, tie and dye fabric, soap, pomade, hand sanitizer, face masks and other items. Beekeeping/honey production is also in the scope. As a result of this project, 80 people will be trained, 40 new businesses will be established, 80 new jobs will be created, and 560 family members will be positively impacted.
“It’s My Business Now”
My name is Rose. I participated in the PPE production training organized by United Way Ghana and learned how to make liquid soap, hand sanitizer, and the nose mask I am wearing. Since I completed school, I have been searching for a job but to no avail. Now I have my own job using my skills to support myself and my family. I plan to also distribute some of my products to the needy to help Ghana.
“I thank United Way Ghana so much for giving me this opportunity to participate in this training. God bless United Way Ghana”- Rose
