Breakthrough Cincinnati

Breakthrough Cincinnati (BTC) is focused on energizing underrepresented aspirational greater Cincinnati students to enter college with confidence. They are taught by service-minded young adults and helped by supportive families.

BTC is dedicated to addressing the academic gap experienced by underrepresented students that, when coupled with the system’s educational inequities, can limit their opportunities for college and prosperity. BTC seeks to transform the community to advance education, equity, and economic mobility in the Cincinnati tri-state area.

“When we look at the learning loss and dislocation that our students have experienced over the last few years, we need the power and the magic of Breakthrough now, perhaps more than we ever have in our 30 year history.” Steve Baggott

Too often students aren’t successful in middle or high school, thwarting opportunities for their college and career. BTC students are not remedial students or gifted students; they are the often-overlooked solid B students with enormous potential to succeed, if given the right attention and programming. The BTC program starts in 6th grade and is grounded in relationships, mentoring, and academic enrichment aimed at creating a college-going mindset while growing their capabilities and confidence until college is within their sights. It consists of tutoring, leadership opportunities, counseling, college preparation activities and visits, and career exploration and readiness.

The $15,000 grant will help build a stronger, scaffolded college and career readiness program consisting of tutoring, leadership opportunities, counseling, college preparation activities and visits, and career exploration and readiness.  At each grade level, students will engage with a particular professional field (i.e., health care, engineering, supply chain, art/design, entrepreneurship, education, construction, etc.) that shows a promise of future employment and financial security. Additionally, the enhanced program will connect students to regional employers early in their lives, with a goal of developing and retaining highly skilled, diverse talent in the Greater Cincinnati workforce for years to come.

“Magical and Empowering”

Breakthrough is an empowering space, where the students have more autonomy in the classroom in terms of what they want to do and what they’re interested in learning. As a result, everyone has fun while growing.

“Breakthrough is such a positive bubble, like it’s such a positive environment where everyone has a growth mindset and the belief that we can be better. I still feel the impact of Breakthrough every day when I’m here at college.” Bijin Basu, Breakthrough Cincinnati graduate
