Together, they serve on the board and are donors to the organization.

“Through our continuous training programs, we transfer our knowledge and competence, along with P&G core values, to help the communities in which we live increase their opportunities.” ~ Enrico D’Onofrio

Nuovi Orizzonti (meaning: New Horizons) operates in central and north Italy rehabilitating young adults with addiction issues – on a mission to provide a road to economic independence and reduce the risk of people slipping back into drug addiction. Nuovi Orizzonti first offers a full therapeutic program including physical detoxification, psychic rebalancing and social reintegration then graduates to vocational training and job skills development. With nearly 20 years of experience in these areas, Nuovi Orizzonti has trained and placed recovering addicts in a range of businesses: catering, restaurants, gardening, maintenance, etc. Their services currently cover several cities in Italy, with a longer-term vision to expand within Italy and to other European countries.

Ice cream – more appropriately gelato – is part and parcel to Italian heritage. Building on this connection, the program – “Ice cream for a Dream” has all the prerequisites of success including:

  • Generating economic empowerment to the individuals involved in the activity.
  • Helping deprived individuals in psychological and material difficulties achieve economic independence.
  • Helping fulfill the dreams of sustainable employment opportunities via earning a salary in order to support themselves & their family.

The course covers theoretical and practical training including making artisan ice-creams, processing raw materials, and the use, maintenance and cleaning of appliances. This is then complemented by training in entrepreneurial and business-running skills as well as job placement.

P&G Alumni Foundation grant of $20,000 will be used to purchase equipment for the ice cream workshop and preparation of the laboratory, ice cream supplies, and programming support including professional guidance and entrepreneurship business skills. Two of Italy’s major ice cream firms will participate in the training effort. With a goal of training 20 rehabilitated young adults ages 18 -29 (Year 1) who have successfully completed the therapeutic program, they will be trained in the art of making and selling artisanal ice cream. The project aims to have 16 people gainfully employed by the end of the year, with 10 of them running their own businesses.
